The Choir of the Baptized

Christ is always present in his Church…in the assembly of the baptized when it prays and sings.

The primary way in which baptized Christians engage the ministry of music is in assembly of the faithful, united with the Christ in his sacrifice of praise to the Father.  Chanting the ritual words of the liturgy, singing the Word of God in psalms, and raising hearts in hymns of praise is the duty and delight of all the baptized.  Learning to sing in the liturgy is a lifelong journey that ends in our heavenly destiny—a place among the angels and saints, singing forever before the throne of God.

Different Gifts, the Same Spirit

The choir is the joyful attendant of the People of God along its pilgrim way, and a sign of its heavenly home.

Some members of the community, through a discernment of gifts, are called forth to share particular musical talents in choirs that both lead and sing on behalf of the assembled Church.  Children, youth and adults are formed for this ministry through the Saint Cecilia Schola Cantorum.  They are called to service of the Mother Church, cultivating its art, preparing for its worship, and committing to its discipline of liturgical prayer.

The Schola Cantorum

The members of the Cathedral choirs receive training and formation in the Schola Cantorum, Latin for “school of singing.”  Historically attached to cathedral churches for the purpose of supporting their worship life, such schools were as much schools of prayer as of music. The idea of the Schola Cantorum is being revived today in several centers for Catholic liturgical music, led by the great choir schools of the Archdiocese of Boston (www.bostonboychoir.org), St. Michael’s Cathedral in Toronto  (www.smcs.on.ca), and the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City (madeleinechoirschool.org).  Saint Cecilia Cathedral is proud to participate in this movement, which honors our beloved patron saint, Cecilia.

Our choristers are prepared for their ministry in Voice for Life choristers' training program of the Royal School of Church Music (www.rscmamerica.org).  Choristers progress individually through various levels of skill and formation during their years in the choir.  Christian discipleship and commitment to community are fostered, with the desired result being integrity and character.

“Character is built by following through with worthy commitments.”
